Effective July 23, 2026
BirdChess is a chess training service operated by Applied Quanta. This policy explains what information BirdChess collects, why we use it, and the choices available to you.
Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account information: your email address and, when you use Google sign-in, your Google account identifier and name.
- Training information: attempted moves, answers, lesson completion, mastery, streaks, accuracy, repertoire preferences, and rating range.
- Coach messages: questions you choose to send to the optional AI coach and the lesson context needed to answer them.
- Imported games: PGN you paste or public games you request from Chess.com or Lichess are processed to provide game review. BirdChess does not save imported games to your account in the current version.
- Billing information: subscription status, referral information, and a Stripe customer identifier if paid plans are enabled. BirdChess does not receive or store full payment-card numbers.
Information collected automatically
- Local app data: when you train without an account, progress is stored in your browser. If you later sign in, the app may sync that progress to your account.
- Device and request information: our hosting and security providers may process IP address, browser type, device information, timestamps, requested pages, and diagnostic or security events when your device connects to BirdChess.
- Cookies: BirdChess uses essential cookies for signed-in sessions, Google authentication state, and referral attribution. We do not currently use advertising cookies or targeted-advertising trackers.
How we use information
- Provide lessons, save progress, personalize review, and sync training across devices.
- Authenticate accounts and send requested magic-link emails.
- Operate subscriptions, referrals, support, security, abuse prevention, and service diagnostics.
- Provide an AI-generated explanation when you explicitly use the coach.
- Comply with law and enforce our Terms of Use.
BirdChess does not sell personal information. We do not use personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
When we share information
We disclose information only as needed to operate BirdChess, complete a transaction you request, protect the service, or comply with law. Depending on the features you use, service providers may include:
- Cloudflare for application hosting, security, database infrastructure, and aggregate site analytics.

- Cloudflare Email Service for magic-link email delivery.
- Chess.com or Lichess when you request public games from those services.
- Stripe for subscription billing when paid plans are offered.
- Cloudflare Workers AI, when you choose to send a question to the AI coach.
We may also disclose information in connection with a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets, subject to applicable law.
Data retention and security
We retain account and training information while your account is active and as reasonably needed to provide the service, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, satisfy legal obligations, and maintain necessary business records. Expired sign-in tokens are periodically removed. When information is no longer required, we delete or de-identify it where reasonably practicable.
We use administrative and technical safeguards appropriate to the information we maintain, including encrypted HTTPS connections and managed infrastructure. No system can guarantee absolute security.

International processing
BirdChess and its providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Those countries may have data-protection rules that differ from those where you live.
Children
BirdChess is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information without appropriate consent, contact us so we can investigate and delete it.
