Understanding the fundamentals of hand evaluation is critical for making accurate bids. When you pick up your cards, your first instinct is to count points. But experienced players know that raw HCP is just the starting point—shape, fit, and vulnerability all matter.

In competitive bidding, you often need to reassess your hand. An excellent 16-point hand with a ninth trump and shortness opposite partner's predicted strength can be worth a game-going raise. Conversely, balanced 17-points with scattered honors opposite a misfit can be worth just a single raise. This hand is about that judgment call.
